Harrie van den Elsen studied piano and chamber music with Jo Dusseldorp at the Maastricht Academy of Music. In 1980 he graduated his piano studies and two years later he graduated his chamber music studies. In addition, he studied music theory with the Dutch composer Matty Niël, and later with the Belgian composer Willem Kersters. After graduating in 1982, he immediately obtained a post as lecturer of music theory. He was the head of the Department of Classical Music at the Maastricht Academy of Music from 1989 to 2003.
Since 2003 he has been the Dean of the Maastricht Academy of Music (Zuyd University of Applied Sciences).
He is also the chair of Netwerk Muziek (an association of Dutch academies of music), chair of the arts education platform comprised of Zuyd University’s four arts faculties, manager of Zuyd University’s International programme, and co-project manager of Quartier des Arts (part of the Maastricht Capital of Culture 2018 project).

Harrie van den Elsen, Dean, is assisted by various members of staff in the day-to-day management of the Academy. Members of staff include the Head of Academic Affairs and Deputy Director (Jan Rademakers), Head of the Classical Music programmes (John Slangen), Head of the Jazz/Pop programmes (Jan Formannoy) and head of Music in Education (Marc Rutten).

Maastricht Academy of Music is a Faculty within Zuyd University and falls under the competent authority of the Board of Governors.
