Piano

Katia Veekmans, daughter of a Belgian father and a Polish mother, got her first piano lessons at the age of five at the Hasselt Conservatory. She studied piano under André De Groote at the Royal Academy of Music in Brussels where she graduated with the highest distinction. Thereafter she studied under Naum Grubert in the Netherlands at the Royal Academy of Music in The Hague where she obtained a Master of Music degree with the highest distinction. Around this time also, she got special training for 5 years as a concert pianist at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Paris
under Brigitte Engerer and also in chamber music under Ruben Lifschitz. She specialized under the famous Russian pianist Lazar Berman for 5 years and he had a significant influence on her musical education. 

Katia Veekmans has won many first prizes at both national and international competitions, viz: the International Rachmaninov Competition, the International Robert Schumann Competition and the International Domenico Sarro Competition in Italy.
 
Her many recitals, television and radio broadcasts, and her appearances at European festivals have established her reputation as an outstanding musician of her generation. She played numerous recitals at international concert stages throughout Europe ~ Muziekcentrum Vredenburg Utrecht (N), Paleis voor Schone Kunsten Bozar, Brussel (B), Beurs van Berlage, Amsterdam (H), Beethovenhalle, Bonn (G), Merchant’s House, Glasgow (GB), Casa da Musica, Porto (P), Salle des Charpentiers, Paris (Fr), Academia Musicale Chigiana, Siena (It).

She has performed as a soloist with various renowned orchestras in major concert halls throughout Europe, with distinguished conductors including Gerard Oskamp, Horia Andreescu, Patrick Baton, Georges Octors, Rino Marrone,  Luca Pfaff, Michel Tilkin, Jan Stulen, Jac Van Steen, Enrico Delamboye, Walter Proost, Dirk De Caluwé, Michel Tabachnik a.o.

Her international festival appearances include the International Chopin Festival, the Mozart Festival, the Festival des Midis Minimes, the Russian Piano Festival, the Flanders Festival, the Festival de Wallonie, Basilica Concerts, Heidelberger Frühling, the Festival Juillet Musical, the Beloeil Festival, the Debussy-Ravel Festival a.o.

She combines a career as a concert pianist with teaching activities. Since 1994 she has been a professor at the Royal Academy of Brussels. She is also a professor at the Faculty of Music of Utrecht (2006 – 2010) and at the Department of European Studies at Zuyd University in Maastricht (since 2009), the Netherlands. Often she is invited to give International Piano Masterclasses in Belgium, Spain, United Kingdom, Scotland, Portugal, Iceland, Slovakia, the Netherlands.
In addition she regularly is a member of the jury in national and international competitions.

Katia Veekmans is a Doctorandus at the Faculty of Arts and Sciences of the University of Brussels. She gave lectures and presentations on:
  • Perception of orchestral timbre when performing piano music: a symbiosis of idea and musical expression.
  • Visualisation of orchestral textures in the piano repertory of Liszt.
