From Year 3, students can start specializing. The degree programme offers two areas of specialization: Music in Arts Education (with CKV) and Special Music Education. You select units and courses in a subject area specific to your specialization, and additionally deepen your vocal/instrumental knowledge and skills.
Music in Art Education [Dutch: Muziek in Kunsteducatie (MIK)]
This specialization is aimed at students who are interested in pursuing a career in music education. Teaching positions are available in primary education [Dutch: Basisonderwijs], secondary education [Dutch: Voortgezet Onderwijs] and certain forms of higher professional education [Dutch: Hoger Beroeps Onderwijs]. Alternatively, you may wish to work in an educational role within art and cultural institutions.
Special Music Education [Dutch: Orthopedagogisch Muziekbeoefenaar (OMB)]
This Specialization allows you to deepen your understanding and knowledge of orthodidactics (affirmative teaching) and orthopedagogics (remedial teaching) and how they are applied in music education. Upon graduation, you will be qualified to provide high-quality music tuition in various special education positions and on behalf of help and service providers. You will for example be qualified to work with physically and mentally handicapped persons, geriatric patients, children with social emotional and developmental problems etc.
